Andrey Kovalinsky
Andrey Kovalinsky, 22, of Belarus has won the 7th International Trumpet Guild Ellsworth Smith Competition, held Nov. 24-26, 2000 in Bad Säckingen, Germany. He has been a student of Reinhold Friedrich at the Karlsruhe Conservatory, Germany since 1999. This fall he also has received tutelage from Edward H. Tarr.

Through the last 9 years Kovalinsky has now won 6 first prizes, 3 seconds and 1 third in 10 international and national competitions. In 1998 he was honored by the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation. As a soloist he performs all over Europe and he is presently under contract as permanent substitute in the Municipal Orchestra of Krefeld-Mönchengladbach. Kovalinsky performed with the brilliant pianist Eriko Takezawa, also from the Karlsruhe Conservatory.

His playing is virtuosic, expressive, and directed towards the audience. His cadenza in the first movement of the Haydn concerto was spectacular and his truly Russian-style rendition of Sergei Vasilenko's Concerto was similarly impressive.

The jury of Jim Thompson, Bo Nilsson and Jany Renz had the unenviable task of choosing the winner.

Andrey Kovalinsky and David Guerrier
15-year-old David Guerrier, a student of Pierre Dutot and Jean Francois Madeuf in the National Concervatory of Lyon, France, captured 2nd prize. His style of playing is expressive in a totally different way. Guerrier captivated the audience with the pleasure of his enticing sound. His sincere and sensitive rendition of the Haydn concerto's second movement and Victor Nessler's Suite from the Opera "The Trumpeter of Säckingen" left the audience breathless.

The two young laureats have developed a good friendship through their past year of competing against each other in several major competitions. We look forward to hearing more of them in the future.

More to follow.
