Roy Cummings, 61, University of Washington (UW) trumpet instructor, collapsed on Wednesday, January 5, 2000, at the UW School of Music as a result of an apparent heart attack. He died following efforts to revive him. At UW, he was the director of the Studio Jazz Ensemble and taught courses in music education, jazz pedagogy, and jazz studies. Cummings was named to the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 1998. He was formerly a student of Raymond Crisara and Vincent Cichowicz.

A lecturer at the UW since 1970, Cummings was known as a warm and caring man who was very close to many of his students. Aside from being a much-loved teacher, husband, and father, he was also a first-call trumpet player and bandleader in Seattle. Highlights of his many incredible accomplishments include conducting the Kenny G Christmas Tour, directing the Music Works Northwest Jazz Ensemble, and appearing with the Seattle Symphony. He also performed with Tony Bennett, Dionne Warwick, Peggy Lee, The Spinners, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, and many others. He appeared frequently as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest artist throughout the Northwest and Canada. His wife Judy and four children survive him
