Herman Arenas and David Gedris
The Symphony Orchestra of the University of Chile has acquired two new trumpeters effective March 2000. David Gedris was hired as principal trumpet and Herman Arenas as second trumpet. David is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, where he was a student of Vincent Pasquarelli. Henry received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Chile where he was student of Eugene King, and subsequently received his Master's degree from Carnegie-Mellon as a student of Vincent Pasquarelli.

In May 2000, a series of trumpet master classes were given at the Music School of the University of Santiago by Symphony Orchestra trumpeter Gedris and Arenas. Basic practice techniques, etudes, and repertory were discussed and performed.

July and August were busy months for Santiago's Philharmonic Brass, an ensemble made up of members of Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra's brass section. Concerts in and around Santiago were performed as well as educational concerts in Melipilla. Also, an extensive 20-day tour of Chile's southern Aruacania region was a highlight. Music of Susato, Bach, Handel, Calvert, Gershwin, Bernstein, as well as Chilean composers Orrego-Salas and Heinlein was performed. Philharmonic Brass trumpeters are Eugene King and Juan Carlos Urbina.
