The Chestnut Brass Company and composer Peter Schickele received a Grammy Award in the Classical Crossover category at ceremonies in Los Angeles on February 23 for their recording "Hornsmoke" which features the brass chamber music of Mr. Schickele.

The recording, on the Newport Classic label (NCD 85638) includes Mr. Schickele's "Piano Concerto #2 (Ole)", "Variations on a Joke", Brass Calendar", "A Little Mosey Music" and "Hornsmoke". Mr. Schickele joined the Chestnut Brass Company as pianist and narrator on the recording. "Brass Calendar" was commissioned by the Chestnut Brass Company.

The Chestnut Brass Company was founded as a street band in Philadelphia in 1977 and has since performed in 49 of the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. They are noted for their adventurous programming and for the use of both modern and historical brass instruments in their concerts and recordings. The ensemble can be heard on ten CD recordings on the Newport Classic, Sony Classical, Polygram, Albany, MusicMasters/Musical Heritage Society and Crystal labels. Their CD of 19th Century Political music, now available from Sony as "Hail to the Chief," rose to number 13 on the "Billboard" crossover charts. They have provided music for numerous documentaries and will appear in the upcoming 6-part PBS "American Experience" production "A House Divided," based on the lives and Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.

Performers on "Hornsmoke" were Bruce Barrie and Christopher Moore, trumpets, Marian Hesse, horn, Brett Shuster, trombone and Jay Krush, tuba. Chris Moore is now teaching at the University of Kansas and Brett is teaching at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. The CBC was assisted on "A Little Mosey Music" by Cynthia Carr, horn teacher at the University of Delaware.
