Norbert A. Carnovale, professor of music at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) for 37 years, passed away unexpectedly on January 6, 2000, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Carnovale was educated at Louisiana State University, Columbia University Teacher's College, and the University of Iowa. He was an accomplished performer in both the jazz and classical idioms. His doctoral thesis at Iowa was the basis for his well-known Bibliography of Twentieth-Century Music for Trumpet and Orchestra (The Brass Press, 1975). In 1974, the second revised edition of the bibliography, co-authored by Paul F. Doerksen, was sent to every ITG member as a free ITG Journal supplement. Carnovale was the first Music Reviews Editor for the ITG Journal from 1977-1981.

Carnovale chaired the music department at USM for five years and developed the school's music industry program. Most recently, he completed two important books, bio-bibliographies of Gunther Schuller and George Gershwin. In recognition of the latter, he was recently invited to Washington, D.C., to attend a conference celebrating the centennial of Gershwin's birth.

At his funeral, ITG member and USM trumpet professor Allan Cox performed a tribute. The USM Foundation is accepting contributions in honor of Carnovale.
