Opera Australia BrassOpera Australia Brass will perform in China as part of a five-concert tour organized by Star Entertainment in conjunction with the Shanghai Arts Corporation. The brass quintet, whose members are James Blunt and Bruce Hellmers, trumpets; Anton Schroeder, horn; Greg van der Struik, trombone; and Carolyn Johns, tuba, will visit Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xiamen and Guangzhou, returning home via Hong Kong. This invitation came as a result of a concerto tour to China taken by van der Struik in 1998, where he performed ex-trumpeter Mike Forsyth's Trombone Concerto, among other works. The five players are permanent members of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and have the company's permission to use the title Opera Australia Brass. Lynda Bacon takes on Hong KongLynda Bacon, billed as 'Australia's foremost female jazz trumpeter,' has made a successful career move into the international touring circuit as a trumpet soloist. This move also launches her debut solo CD New Directions. Lynda and her band recently toured Hong Kong and performed a five-night stint at The Jazz Club, Hong Kong's most prominent jazz venue. Lynda and her band played the original music scores from her CD and received much praise, including comments on Lynda's 'beautiful lyrical flugel sound along with electric trumpet sonorities.' The band is promoted as Sydney's most innovative and versatile group and combines 'traditional jazz, trends from the 60's and 70's, and contemporary funk grooves.' This follows Lynda's choice of styles and newly conceived original music concepts. Segal tours USExpatriate Wollongong trumpeter Jeff Segal recently took part in a highly acclaimed U.S. tour as soloist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra performing the Shostakovich Concerto for Piano & Trumpet. Segal is currently principal trumpet of the Tonhalle-Orchestrer Zürich. His teachers include Paul Goodchild and Daniel Mendelow in Sydney as well as Dr. Edward Tarr at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. He also performed as Hakan Hardenberger's assistant at the Malmö Musikhogskolan in Sweden. From 1991 until 1996, Segal was solo trumpet in the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. During this period, he performed often as a soloist with the orchestra and made many radio and television appearances. In 1994, he was a soloist at the Pablo Casals festival in Puerto Rico.
