The famous Lab Bands of the University of North Texas have inspired trumpeter/engineers at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory to organize their own Lab Band. Successfully launched by trumpeters Patrick Olguin and Brenda Burkhart, the 40's-style swing band is really taking off, boasting a membership of 23 players/singers. The rehearsal area is located in a real lab in the Environmental Test Facility - a soundproof building.

The strongest section is "reputed" to be the trumpet section (!), featuring Patrick Olguin, Brenda Burkhart, Stephen Noland, and Mark Maimone. Ms. Burkhart plays lead, an occupation she also enjoys on a freelance basis in the Los Angeles area. Says Olguin: "Putting together a lunch-time band was a challenging job, but not too bad. After all, it's not like it's rocket science."
