|
ITG member Richard B. Lehman passed away unexpectedly on January 12, 1999 at his Washington, D.C. home. Lehman, the son of Donald and Janet Lehman, was born April 2, 1958 in Kettering, Ohio. He began musical studies with his father at age 6. After graduating from Fairmont West High School in Kettering, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1980 from Ohio State University. He earned a master’s degree in applied trumpet from the University of Louisville two years later. Lehman studied trumpet with Richard Burkhart at Ohio State and with Leon Rapier at U of L. He taught trumpet at Illinois State University from 1982-89 before winning a 1990 audition to join "The President's Own" United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C. He served as solo cornetist with the Marine Band, and was regularly featured as a soloist on the band’s programs and national concert tours. He also performed frequently for events at the White House before leaving the band in 1998. Most recently, Lehman worked as a freelance trumpet player and instructor, and was a member of the Washington, D.C. National Guard Band. He was also a member of the music faculty at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland.
