The International Trumpet Guild Board of Directors has voted to bestow the ITG Honorary Award, the ITG's highest honor, upon Vincent Cichowicz, Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Cichowicz was a founding member of ITG and has served as a member of the advisory board for The Instrumentalist. He was recently featured as the subject of a major article honoring his career in the December 1998 ITG Journal.

Cichowicz began his career at age 17 in the Houston Symphony Orchestra. In 1952, he became a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for 23 years. He was also a member of the legendary Chicago Symphony Brass Quintet and was a participant in the celebrated Grammy Award winning Columbia recording of Gabrieli’s Antiphonal Brass Music, recently reissued on CD by Sony Classical CD [MHK 62353]. He has performed under the baton of the world’s leading conductors including Rafael Kubelik, Fritz Reiner, George Solti, Otto Klemperer, Leopold Stokowski, Paul Hindemith, Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Carlo Maria Guilini, Claudio Abbado and many others. In 1995 he was appointed Music Director for Chicago’s Millar Brass Ensemble and participated in their most recent recording, Brass Surround on Delos [DE 3171]. Mr. Cichowicz is an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha and Pi Kappa Lambda, and in 1997, he received a special achievement award from the European Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild. He was also presented “The Legends in Teaching Award” from Northwestern University. Mr. Cichowicz has been a faculty member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada since 1980, and the Brass Seminar program at The Domaine Forget in Charlevoix, Quebec since 1986. He has conducted numerous workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan and is regarded as one of North America’s foremost experts in brass pedagogy.

In addition to the Honorary Award, the board has voted to present Gordon Mathie, Professor Emeritus at the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College, the ITG Award of Merit. Mathie was the first treasurer for ITG and has served the organization as Vice President and as a member of the board of directors. He has contributed numerous articles to the ITG Journal and many other professional journals. Mathie has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Vermont Symphony, The Potsdam Brass Quintet, and served for seven summers as solo cornetist for the Leonard Smith Concert Band. In retirement, he is still active as a theater and big band lead trumpet player. He has been honored by the State University of New York with the Chancellor’s award for excellence in teaching, in addition to receiving the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Orpheus Award, and the Wayne State University Arts Achievement Award.
