| Trumpet Activities at FSU | Jun 14 99 |
|
It has been a busy year for the trumpet studio at Florida State University (Tallahassee, Florida, USA). Two students of Professor Bryan Goff have risen to the top of two major competitions. William Takacs, a graduate student at FSU, was the first prize winner in the Master's division of the National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University in March. He performed the 3rd movement of the Desenclos Incantation, Threne, et Danse. Scott Beckett, a Master’s student, was the first prize winner of the 1999 ITG Solo Competition at the ITG Conference in Richmond. Beckett chose to perform Joseph Haydn’s Concerto in addition to the required Casterede Sonatine. Takacs has since completed his coursework at FSU and will perform with the Skyline Brass as artist-in-residence at two universities. Beckett will be returning to FSU in the fall to pursue doctoral studies. The School of Music hosted the biennial Festival of New Music in February. Composers John Corigliano (a Housewright Eminent Scholar), Augusta Read Thomas, Ellen Taafe Zwilich, and Eric Ewazen were in attendance for the festival which featured their music along with that of several other composers. The Florida State Brass Quintet (Bryan Goff, Scott Beckett - trumpets) gave a splendid performance of Ewazen’s Shadowcatcher for Brass Quintet and Wind Orchestra. The composer was also on hand to work with trumpet students. Ewazen coached the FSU President’s Seminar Trumpet Ensemble on his Fantasia for Seven Trumpets. The group subsequently performed the work at the National Trumpet Competition. He was also presented in a master class for a performance of his Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. Trumpeter Scott Taylor performed the work and also presented it at the National Trumpet Competition. Jonathan Ford (a 1999 ITG scholarship winner), Blakely Carroll, Ben Simon, and Jonathan Bunag were also semifinalists at NTC. Ewazen also worked with The Titan Brass. The quintet (Scott Taylor, Jonathan Ford - trumpets) played Colchester Fantasy and received comments from the composer. The Canadian Brass (Housewright Eminent Scholars in the School of Music) gave a riveting performance with the FSU Symphony Orchestra later in February. Their Saturday evening performance was complimented with a master class Sunday afternoon. The Millennium Brass Quintet (Robert Clark, Ben Simon - trpts) were the featured performers in the master class. Bruce Dickey, Professor of Cornett and Performance Practice, Schola Cantorum Baselienses, Switzerland, was a guest of the School of Music Early Music Program and presented a master class to the trumpet studio and a lecture recital for the entire school. Dickey is a world-renowned cornettist and showed masterful skill and command of the instrument. Also this past year, trumpeter Jerry Bryant, who just recently finished his BM at FSU, was selected as the newest member of the U.S. Navy Band, Washington, D.C. Bryant attended the Mannes School of Music in NYC where he studied with Vincent Penzarella following his studies at FSU.
