Swedish natural trumpet virtuoso Niklas Eklund, First Prize winner of the 1996 Altenburg Competition, will be engaged in a tour of the USA from April 11 to May 21, 1999. In collaboration with the outstanding Swedish soprano, Maria Keohane, Eklund will present concerts and masterclasses in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Minnesota, and Wisconsin with a culminating performance to take place at the 1999 Conference of the International Trumpet Guild at the University of Richmond - Virginia on Friday, May 20 at 8 p.m. Since his success at the Altenburg Competition, Eklund has enjoyed a skyrocketing reputation for his exceptional artistry and his mastery of the natural trumpet. His skills are evidenced clearly on his first four CD releases on the Naxos label, marketed under the title The Art of the Baroque Trumpet. Eklund's colleague and collaborator, Maria Keohane, is quickly developing an international reputation as a rising star of significant presence. The young Swedish soprano possesses a wondrous clarity of voice and musical expression which is equally adaptable to early music as well as contemporary music and improvisation. The ideal union of the expressiveness of the human voice with the noble character of the natural trumpet played in its clarino register, as described in early sources, results in a unique blend of colors and richness of sound which achieves near celestial properties.
