The 2010 Art Of Sound Summer Brass Institute and Festival hosted by the Bay Brass featured guest artists Mark Inouye, San Francisco Symphony principal trumpet, and internationally renowned trumpet artist/scholar Gabriele Cassone. Inouye gave a master class in which he shared stories, wisdom, and helped participants with their trumpeting and music making. He also performed the Tomasi Tryptique for those in attendance. Beyond the master class, Inouye gave private lessons, played "Four Sketches for Brass Quintet" by Anthony Plog with a quintet comprised of Inouye, SFS colleagues Nicole Cash (horn) and Tim Higgins (trombone), plus SF Opera principal trumpet Adam Luftman and SF Ballet tubist Peter Wahrhaftig. The group's performance received an enthusiastic standing ovation.
Coming from Italy, guest artist Gabriele Cassone offered two classes: an Art of Historical Trumpet lecture-recital and another master class. In the historical lecture-recital, he performed on an array of historical trumpets, ending with a recent modern work written for C trumpet. In an artists’ concert, Cassone also soloed in works by Mahler, Strauss and Lauridsen alongside members of the Bay Brass including San Francisco Conservatory Professor of Trumpet David Burkhart.
Trumpeters had a wealth of opportunities to learn with these artists and with members of the Bay Brass. They performed in quintets and large ensembles. Trumpeters received coaching by Adam Luftman and David Burkhart in works for trumpet octet by Gabrieli and Broughton. Select Fellowship recipients performed alongside faculty artists in two concert performances.
