The Brass Herald is pleased to announce that Dr. David Champouillon has joined its team of writers. Starting with the August 2010 magazine, Champouillon will write an on-going column dealing with brass and the jazz world. Columns will include interviews with leading jazz brass artists, clinics on jazz brass performance, and introductions to the role of each brass instrument throughout the history of jazz.
The Brass Herald, a publication for all brass musicians, is one of the world's leading brass journal and is published in October, March, May and August. Launched in August 2003, it covers the whole range of brass from Brass Bands to Orchestral brass, Salvation Army bands to Big Bands and Military Bands to Jazz.
Dr. David Champouillon is a Bach Performing Artist, Professor of Trumpet and Jazz at East Tennessee State University, leader of The Jazz Doctors and the ETSU Faculty Brass, Coordinator of the Brass Area, and Director of the ETSU Jazz Program. He is a former soloist in both classical and jazz idioms in the United States Air Force Band system; has performed at various jazz festivals and with numerous orchestras including the Utah Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Utah Chamber Orchestra, Ashlawn-Highland Opera, Utah Opera, and Ballet West. He has also performed with artists including The Temptations, Disney Ice Shows, Jerry Butler, Mel Torme, Lenore Raphael, The Drifters, and many others. A well-published author and international conference lecturer, his performance credits include extensive national performances over a thirty-year career. He has a long list of students who have gone on to national prominence at graduate schools, professional and military bands, and as teachers. Champouillon is two-time winner in the Downbeat Student music awards in the category of Best Big Band. He has studied trumpet extensively with Gilbert Johnson, William Fielder, George Coble, Laurie McGaw, Ed Gornik, Elliott Topalian and James Mosher. Champouillon is a graduate of the University of Miami and the University of Northern Colorado.
