Dr. John Adler

John Adler has been named assistant professor of trumpet at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, starting in the fall of 2010.  His duties will be teaching applied trumpet and coordinating a studio of 30-40 undergraduate and graduate music majors.  Adler comes to UNC from Virginia Tech, where he served as assistant professor of trumpet and director of jazz studies for four years.

Adler has a diverse performance resume and is in demand as a soloist and educator all across the US.  In the spring of 2010, he was featured as a soloist with the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Manchester Symphony Orchestra, and performed guest recitals at the Ohio State University, Western Michigan University, Bowling Green State University, and Grand Valley State University.  In October of 2009, his first solo CD “Confronting Inertia” was released on Origin Classical.  It contains six new works commissioned for the project featuring classical works, many incorporating improvisation in a classical context, for trumpet and piano or electronics by jazz composers. 

Adler has performed with the Reno Philharmonic, the symphony orchestras of Eugene, Miami, and Roanoke, the Kandinsky Trio, the Palm Beach Pops, Festival Brass, Opera Roanoke, and the Oregon Festival of American Music Sinfonia Orchestra.  Additionally, John has shared the stage with numerous jazz greats including John Hollenbeck, Maria Schneider, Bobby Shew, and Conrad Herwig, and has played lead trumpet in the Jaco Pastorius Big Band, the Denis Noday Big Band, the Reno Jazz Orchestra, and the Grammy Award Winning University of Miami Concert Jazz Band.  He is also a founding member of the jazz chamber group Seven Minus. 

A native of Reno, Nevada, John completed a double major as an undergraduate in classical and jazz performance at the University of Nevada-Reno studying with Dr. Larry Engstrom.  Additionally, John completed his D.M.A. in trumpet performance at the University of Miami where he studied with Craig Morris, and a MM from the University of Oregon, where he studied with George Recker.  John’s primary teachers/mentors in the jazz area include Steve Owen, Larry Engstrom, Alex Norris, Greg Gisbert, James Miley, and Whit Sidener.
