Hosted by the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music April 12-17, the 2010 Riga International Brass Symposium featured master classes, lessons, and performances by Mogens Andreson (trombone), Olivier Dallerby (horn), Reijer Dorresteijn (trumpet), Michael Lind (tuba), and William Richardson (trumpet). The April 13th “Teacher’s Recital” featured Dorresteijn performing “Flux II” by Jean-Phillipe Calvin and Amilkars Vaske Dias’ “Tojo;” Richardson performed J.B.G. Neruda’s “Concerto in E-flat,” “Legende” by Georges Enescu, and three movements of Eric Ewazen’s “An Elizabethan Songbook” with tuba player and Symposium Coordinator Janis Retenais.
Dorresteijn traveled to Riga from his home country of the Netherlands, bringing four students with him to participate in the events. Dutch trumpet players Eline Beumer, Jordi Lensink, and Ruben van Schijndel joined Latvian native Armands Svinsters (who is studying with Dorresteijn at ArtEZ School of Music Enschede, one of the largest music schools in the Netherlands) to perform a concert on April 15 with the Jazeps Medins Music School Wind Orchestra. The Symposium finished with an outstanding concert featuring the JVLMA Brass Ensemble, Janis Retenais, director, and the debut performance of the Latvian Brass Band, Andis Karelis, conductor.
Richardson has spent the Spring 2010 term teaching at the JVLMA as a Fulbright Scholar. He serves as Associate Professor at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, U.S.A. and as a member the Saint Joseph (Missouri) Symphony.
