Leonard Candelaria at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 21 April 2010

Dr. Leonard Candelaria, Past President of the International Trumpet Guild and Trumpet Artist for the Edwards Instrument Company, was in residency at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville April 14-17, 2010. During his visit Dr. Candelaria worked with SIUE trumpet students in both master class and private lesson settings. To culminate the visit, Candelaria and the SIUE Trumpet Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John Korak, performed in recital at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Clayton, Missouri. Candelaria was featured on Paul Butcher’s arrangement of A Mighty Fortress is our God, Francesco Manfredini’s Concerto for Two Trumpets (with Korak), Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s Turandot, and Jimmy Van Heusen’s Someone To Watch Over Me. Other works by Bach, Buxtehude, Campra, Byrd, Lauridsen, Fitzgerald and Archer, and a performance by the SIUE Natural Trumpet Ensemble, were included in the evening’s recital. Performing for Dr. Candelaria during his residency were SIUE graduate students Adrian LePique (Tomasi Concerto), and Rachel Gray (Honegger Intrada, Torelli Sonata in D, G.1, and Höhne Slavische Fantasie), and undergraduate students Brian Birch (Arban Carnival of Venice), Colin Galvin (Bozza Rustiques), Andrew Asadorian (Torelli Sonata in D, G.1), John Corradini (Charlier Solo de Concours), Nick Calza (Haydn Concerto), Chris Gore (Ewazen Sonata), Krista Kearney (Puccini Un Bel Di Vedremo), Logan Schoch (Gershwin/Turrin Someone to Watch Over Me), Timothy Hassall (Ewazen Sonata), and Matt Bittles (Bozza Rustiques).
