Maurice Murphy received the MBE award (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Music in the Queen's New Year Honours List. Both government ministers and members of the public send nominations for the honor. A selection commitee and eventually the Queen approve the recipients.
Maurice Murphy was Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 2007. He can be heard on many sound tracks, including all the Star Wars movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Gangs of New York, Philadelphia, Mr. Holland's Opus, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Batman and Alien movies, to name a few. Before his appointment with the London Symphony Orchestra, Murphy was principal cornetist in the Black Dyke Mills Band from 1956 to 1961. He also played with the Hallé Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and La Mer Orchestra.
The Order of the British Empire is a honor created by King George V in 1917 to recognize civilians at home and servicemen in support positions during WWI. Today, civilians and service personnel receive the award for public service or other distinctions. The ranks of the Order include Knight or Dame Grand Cross, Knight or Dame Commander, Commander, Officer, and Member.
Other recipients of the various British Honours this year include actor Sir Patrick Stewart, rugby player and coach Sir Ian McGeechan, and Dame Dr. Claire Bertschinger, who helped inspire global aid to Ethiopia in the 1984 famine.
