Brian Walker & Farren Mayfield in the NSU Jazz Lab

In the Fall 2009 semester, three guest trumpet artists visited the campus of Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to present master classes and recitals.


On December 7, Brian Walker, trumpet teacher at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, presented a master class and recital in the NSU Jazz Lab.  During his master class, Walker coached junior Timothy Moore on Eric Ewazen’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, sophomore Shayna Cowan on Ennio Porrino’s Concertino, and senior Jared Brown on Henry Purcell’s Sonata for Trumpet and Strings. Walker’s recital included Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Halsey Stevens, Andante et Allegro by J. Guy Ropartz, Legende by George Enescu, and the Carnival of Venice by Herbert L. Clarke.  NSU faculty Farren Mayfield, piano and Jason Dovel, trumpet joined Walker on stage.


On October 12, Dr. Peter Wood, trumpet professor at the University of South Alabama (USA) and Recording Reviews Editor for ITG, presented a master class and recital at NSU.  Woods’ recital consisted of Concerto in D Major by Giuseppe Tartini, Legende by George Enescu, Amanda Pepping’s arrangement of Manuel de Falla’s Spanish Dances,  Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano by Erik Morales, Prayer by Eli Shoot, and Rondino by Allan Street.  Dr. Wood was accompanied by USA piano professor Dr. Robert Holm.

On September 28, Oscar Passley, trumpet teacher at Eastfield College, presented a master class and recital at NSU.  For his evening recital, he played a diverse program of both classical and jazz selections.  The classical portion included Manfredini’s Concerto for Two Trumpets, Britten’s Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury, and Hummel’s Concerto.  Sarah Bruguiere provided piano accompaniment.  The jazz portion included several works featuring Passley and NSU saxophone professor Dr. Tommy Poole, in collaboration with a student jazz combo.


In related news, NSU sophomore trumpet student Kristen Layne was recently selected by the Oklahoma Jazz Educators Association as Oklahoma’s 2009 Collegiate Jazz Musician of the Year.
