Yates, Scodwell, Wing, and Champouillon

On April 17th “Spring Jazz at the Culp: Vegas—Can You Say High Trumpet, Baby?” featured Las Vegas veteran lead trumpeters Tony Scodwell and Greg Wing along with USAF Heritage of America Band lead trumpet Jon Yates. The trumpeters all performed with the ETSU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. David Champouillon, Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies. The concert highlighted works featuring trumpet solos from the big band days. Scodwell performed Armstrong’s West End Blues and Wing performed Trinita. Scodwell and Wing combined to perform the two-trumpet feature Memories of You. Yates performed I Remember Clifford and teamed up with Champouillon on Duet from the Tutti’s Trumpet album. All four combined to perform And The Angels Sing to a standing ovation.
In addition to the concert, all artists gave individual master classes to full rooms. Topic included career paths, daily practice, dedication, attitude, and balancing the daily grind of being a professional trumpeter with practice requirements.

Greg Wing, Professor of Trumpet at Morehead State University, holds degrees in Trumpet Performance from Indiana University and Morehead State University. He is sponsored by Conn-Selmer as a Bach Performing Artist. He performs with the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra "DOJO", Horizon Brass Quintet, and the Morehead Faculty Jazz Sextet. Wing has been a studio musician for Westwind Musical Productions of Upland, California since 1988 and has recorded numerous commercial productions and convention soundtracks including and our recent Winter Olympic themes. Wing is recognized as one of the nations leading trumpet artists having served as Lead Trumpet with the Buddy Rich Big Band, Paul Anka, Tom Jones, Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas Hilton, Flamingo Hilton, Stardust Hotel's house orchestras, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, and Natalie Cole. Wing is Conn-Selmer Corporation Artist/ Clinician for Vincent Bach Trumpets.
Tony Scodwell attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston on a Downbeat Magazine scholarship. He left school in the fall of 1962 to join the Stan Kenton Orchestra and from that point on has been a working, professional musician. He has performed as lead trumpet and soloist with Stan Kenton Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Jimmy Dorsey Band, Harry James' Las Vegas Band, Kurt Edelhagen-Cologne television/radio band, Buddy Rich, Harrah's Club, Las Vegas John Haig Relief, Caeser's Palace and the Frontier Hotel. He has also performed with Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis, Ann-Margaret, Tom Jones, Roy Clark, Anthony Newley and many more.
Chief Master Sergeant Jon W. Yates is the Band Manager of the Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, VA 2005. He holds the B.S. in Music Education (Northwest Missouri State University” and the M.A. in Trumpet Performance/Pedagogy (Webster University). His former teachers include Susan Slaughter, Ward Rounds, and Mike Vax. He has performed with the Omaha Symphony, Omaha Opera, Omaha Big Band, Crystal Gayle, Mary Wilson and The Supremes, Frank Sinatra Jr., The Temptations, The Four Tops and Bobby Vinton. Chief Yates entered the United States Air Force in 1980 and his assignments include Travis AFB, CA, Langley AFB, VA, Scott AFB, IL, Offutt AFB, NE, and Yokota Air Base, Japan 2005.
The ETSU Jazz Program includes courses in large and small jazz ensemble, history of jazz, jazz improvisation and theory, jazz pedagogy, and applied study. The jazz ensemble has performed at the Mountain Empire Jazz Festival, the Tri-Cities Jazz Fest, and the Virginia Highlands Jazz Fest. The ensemble has performed in concert with such notable artists as Maynard Ferguson, Jon Faddis, Vince DiMartino, Ron Modell, Al Hood, Marvin Stamm, Bill Mays, Rufus Reid, Ed Soph, Vaughn Nark, Pete BarenBregge, Ed Shaughnessy, and Lenore Raphael.
