Brass Quintet from the US Marine Band visits Mississippi State University 11 March 2009

A brass quintet from “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, DC performed on the campus of Mississippi State University on Saturday, February 28, 2009 as part of the Sixth Annual MSU Brass Seminar.  The quintet featured Master Sergeant Matthew Harding, trumpet; Gunnery Sergeant Michael Mergen, trumpet; Gunnery Sergeant Hilary Hart, horn; Gunnery Sergeant Chris Clark, trombone and Gunnery Sergeant Chris Tiedeman, tuba.  Members of the quintet coached three student brass quintets performing music of Koetsier, Ewald and Scheidt in an afternoon brass chamber music master class.  Individual master classes for trumpet, horn, trombone and tuba followed.  Sergeants Harding and Mergen worked with MSU trumpet students Justin Robinson, performing the Brandt Concertpiece No. 2; Greg King, performing the first movement from the Böhme Concerto in F Minor;  Ariel Biholar, performing the opening sections of the Pakhmutova Concerto and Patrick Vincent, performing the first movement of the Castérède Brèves Rencontres.

The evening recital featured the quintet performing Three Venetian Canzoni, edited by Ray Mase; the Verne Reynolds arrangement of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, Op. 12 and Adam Schoenberg’s Reflecting Light.  The performance concluded with MSU Assistant Professor of Trumpet, Dr. Michael Huff; Chair of the Department of Music, Dr. Michael Brown; Associate Professor of Trombone Dr. Richard Human; MSU trombone student Fred Hadley and Delta State University Assistant Professor of Low Brass Dr. Doug Mark joining the members of the quintet in performing the Purcell, Trumpet Tune & Air and the Susato Suite of Renaissance Dances from the Philip Jones library.
