Dr. Chris Carrillo has been appointed Artist/Teacher of Trumpet at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia beginning the Fall 2009 academic year. His duties will include undergraduate and graduate studio trumpet instruction and performing as a member of the faculty brass quintet.
Prior to his appointment at JMU, Dr. Carrillo served on the faculties of Texas A&M University-Kingsville and The University of Texas at San Antonio. He has performed as a member of the Corpus Christi and Victoria Symphony Orchestras for the past five seasons, and he has performed with numerous ensembles including the Austin Symphony, Austin Lyric Opera, Victoria Bach Festival, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and the Jacksonville Symphony. He has recorded most recently with the Dallas Wind Symphony, The University of Texas Wind Ensemble and the Barbwire New Music Project. As a commercial musician, Dr. Carrillo has performed with several national Broadway touring productions and he worked with such varied artists as Chuck Mangione, the Fifth Dimension, the Temptations, and John Pizzarelli.
Dr. Carrillo holds an MM and DMA from The University of Texas at Austin, a BM from The University of Memphis and he did additional studies as an exchange student at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His former teachers include Ray Sasaki, Ray Crisara, David Spencer, Albert Ligotti, and Ed Sandor.
