On May 17, 2008 the Louisville Trumpet Ensemble hosted Brassapalooza at the Churchill Downs as part of fundraising for a tour to Italy. Bugler Steve Buttleman, a former student of Prfr. Michael Tunnell, came up with an idea to try and set five world records:
1.the most number of buglers for the “Call to the Post” for an actual race,
2. the largest number of trumpeters to play "Bugler's Holiday" with a brass band accompaniment;
3. the largest number of horns to play the beautiful slow Horn Solo from "Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony" with brass band;
4. the largest number of trombonists to play "Lassus Trombone" with brass band; and
5. the largest number of tubas and euphoniums to play "POWER" by John Stevens. Derby City Brass Band, conducted by John Jones, and the U of L Trumpet Ensemble was also be featured on this program.
The final numbers from the May 17 Brassapalooza: 36 trumpeters for the "Call to the Post"; 19 trumpeters for "Bugler's Holiday"; 18 horns for Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony" slow movement; 15 trombonists for "Lassus Trombone"; and 7 tubas and 6 euphoniums for John Stevens' "Power". Don Wilson Music and Music Go Round were sponsors of this event.
