In March 2007, the American Bandmasters Association awarded the Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation to University of North Texas Professor of Trumpet Emeritus John Haynie. The American Bandmasters Association (ABA) citation was established in 1962 to recognize those outside the membership of the ABA who have rendered conspicuous service in the interest of bands and band music in America.
The presentation was made on January 8, 2008, at a luncheon in Professor Haynie’s home in Denton. James Keene, past president of the ABA and Director of the University of Illinois Bands, was host and master of ceremonies. Robert Blanton, former student of John Haynie and retired Director of Fine Arts, Klein ISD, presented the award. Also in attendance at the luncheon were Marilyn Haynie, John’s wife of fifty-seven years, son Mark Haynie, a Dallas attorney and General Counsel for the International Trumpet Guild; Eugene Corporon, Director of Bands and Wind Studies at the University of North Texas; Keith Johnson, and John Holt, Professors of Trumpet at University of North Texas (UNT); Ron Fink, UNT Percussion Professor Emeritus; Richard Floyd, State Director of Music Activities for the University Interscholastic League; Dennis Fisher, Associate Director of Wind Studies at UNT; Dr. James Scott, Dean of the UNT College of Music; Tim Rhea, Director of Bands at Texas A&M University; Ken Van Winkle, Director of Bands at New Mexico State University; Joe Gunn, retired Director of Bands at Trinity High School; Dick Clardy, Executive Director, Choice Music Events; Ray Lichtenwalter, retired Director of Bands at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Of the fifty-seven recipients, only two have been trumpet teachers – Clifford P. Lillya (University of Michigan) and Raymond Crisara (University of Texas). Other trumpet-player recipients include Vincent Bach (1975), Carl "Doc" Severinsen (1999), and Goldman Band soloist John E. "Ned" Mahoney (also 2007).
Professor Haynie taught at UNT from 1950-1990. In 1984, he received the ’Fessor Graham Award, which is presented annually to the faculty member voted most outstanding by the North Texas student body. He received the ITG Award of Merit in 2003, and his book Inside John Haynie's Studio, co-authored with former ITG Editor Anne Hardin, was published by the University of North Texas Press in 2007.
