ITG member Dr. John Pursell, Yamaha Trumpet Artist and Clinician, was recently a featured session presenter at the Ohio State Music Educators Convention, held in Cincinnati, the New Jersey Music Educators Conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey and the Maryland Music Educators Conference in Columbia, Maryland.
Pursell presented his session entitled “Building Better Brass,” helping over 300 music instructors improve the brass sections in their bands and orchestras by improving intonation, eliminating common errors and using athletic weight-training principles to improve embouchure strength and endurance.
Stephanie Rivers, an Ohio high school band director, said, “I love his presentations. Not only is he a terrific performer, but he gives a ton of information and helpful hints.” This was Pursell’s second appearance at all three of the conventions.
John Pursell is retired from his position as the Senior Ceremonial Trumpeter with the United States Air Force Band. He now performs nationally as a trumpet soloist for the Yamaha Corporation, and has been a featured presenter at 15 state music educator conferences since 2003. He has published articles in the ITG Journal and in Bandworld Magazine, and is the author of What I’ve Learned—The Free Lance Trumpeter’s Guide to Professional Music.
