Larry Elam, principal trumpet of the Philharmoniker Hamburg and Staatsoper Hamburg (Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra and State Opera), has died in a car accident in Germany on 29th January: he was 64.

Elam was born in Oklahoma and studied at the Juilliard School, and in Paris with Maurice André. He worked with the Metropolitan Opera, Sydney Opera and New York Philharmonic, among others, before going to Hamburg in 1977.
