The jazz trumpeter Pete Candoli died on January 11th in Studio City, Los Angeles: he was 84. Candoli’s career included playing with practically every well-known big band including those of Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton and Count Basie among many other famous names: he had played with at least twenty-seven bands in all. He did a great deal of studio work, at least 5000 recording sessions for records, film and TV, and won major awards from Metronome and Down Beat magazines. Look named him as one of the seven all-time outstanding jazz trumpet players alongside Armstrong, Beiderbecke, Berigan, James, Gillespie and Hackett. He was also a composer and arranger, working with artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Peggy Lee. He played first trumpet in Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto (1945) which was written for the Herman band.

Candoli was married and divorced three times and is survived by one ex-wife; he also leaves a partner, a sister, two daughters and two grandchildren. He was the brother of Conte Candoli, who died in 2001. For more information please see the Candoli site and obituaries linked below.
