The Music Department at Mississippi State University was very pleased to welcome Dr. Leonard Candelaria as the year’s trumpet clinician for the Fifth Annual Brass Seminar held November 2 & 3, 2007 on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. Dr. Candelaria is Artist in Residence and Professor of Trumpet at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and previously served as Regents Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Texas. Edwards Trumpets generously supported his appearance at Mississippi State University.
On Friday night, November 2, 2007, Dr. Candelaria, along with fellow guest clinicians Robert Patterson (horn, Memphis Symphony), Joshua Houser (trombone, Tennessee Tech) and Demondrae Thurmon (euphonium and tuba, University of Alabama) coached four student brass quintets before breaking into instrument specific classes. In the Trumpet Master Class, Dr. Candelaria worked with MSU trumpet students Adam Arredondo, Ariel Biholar and Patrick Vincent performing works by Vassily Brandt, Karl Höhne and Vincent Bach. In an additional Trumpet Master Class held the next morning, Dr. Candelaria had the opportunity to demonstrate several Edwards trumpets and discuss their construction. He also lectured on basic concepts in brass playing, tips for becoming a better trumpeter and discussed techniques for better practice habits.
On Saturday evening, Dr. Candelaria led the trumpet section of the Artist Brass Ensemble consisting of Michael Huff (MSU Professor of Trumpet), Danny Blurton (Principal Trumpet of the Tupelo Symphony and Amro Music) and Elias Arredondo (Mississippi area Freelance Musician) perform Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon duodecimi toni, Maurice Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte, Chris Hazell’s Three Brass Cats and Elgar Howarth’s arrangement of the Earle of Oxford’s March. Also featured on the program was the North Mississippi Trumpet Quartet made up of music educators Ryan Todd, Andy Hall and Brandon Hardin along with Danny Blurton performing James Olcott’s Four Sequential Fanfares, Fisher Tull’s Canonical Trilogy, the Robert King arrangement of Samuel Scheidt’s Canzon and The Four Horsemen (ITG reprint) by Gus Guentzel.
