Vyacheslav Shchyolokov – after whom this competition is named – was a gifted performer, a talented composer and an outstanding trumpet teacher. His ten concerti for trumpet and orchestra, along with numerous pieces, special exercises and etudes included in his "Progressive study of Trumpet Playing" have greatly enriched the trumpet repertoire. The First International Trumpet Competition took place for the first time in 2004 and was held in memory of the Shchyolikov‘s 100th anniversary. It attracted many performers from leading  schools in Germany, China and such Russian cities as Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Saratov, and Krasnodar among others.

This second competition had two classes, "solo skill" and "brass ensemble".  The competition programme includes concerts, master classes, and a conference concerning topical brass instrument issues.
