2015 Trumpet Days --Trumpet-ology at East Tennessee State University

East Tennessee State University was honored to host a trumpet weekend entitled “Trumpet Days – Trumpet-ology”. The main guest artist and clinician was Yamaha Performing Trumpet Artist Allen Vizzutti.

Vizzutti’s appearance was partially funded by a generous Yamaha grant. Additional artists included Dr. Scott Meredith (Professor of Trumpet – University of Wyoming), Rich Willey (Maynard Ferguson band alumnus), and Dr. David Champouillon (ETSU Professor of Trumpet and Bach Performing Artist). The “Trumpet-ology” concert on Friday, May 1st featured all of the guest artists. The first half was all four trumpet jazz arrangements with The Jazz Doctors (ETSU jazz faculty). The literature included Body and Soul, Con Suerte, Doodads and Laura, Are You In There? The second half of the concert featured all of the guest artists separately and in various combinations with the ETSU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Champouillon. Vizzutti performed One in a Million, Joy Spring, I’ll Remember April as soloist. Meredith performed Boy Meets Horn, while Willey and Champouillon joined forces on Just Friends and Free Again. The concert concluded with Vizzutti, Willey, and Champouillon all performing together on A Night in Tunisia.

 

Saturday, May 2nd included a master class by Vizzutti that included a performance by the ETSU Trumpet Ensemble on Great American Fanfare. Vizzutti gave many helpful suggestions after launching into an a cappella version of The Carnival of Venice and interacting with the class attendees. Vizzutti also gave several individual privates lessons. Meredith presented a master class for the ETSU Trumpet Studio focusing on jury preparation. The evening concert, “Trumpet Days” featured Meredith and Champouillon on a full recital. Meredith performed Ewazen’s Sonata for Trumpet and Turrin’s Intrada. Champouillon performed Turrin’s Two Portraits along with Handel’s Suite for Trumpet in D major and “Let the Bright Seraphim”. Meredith and Champouillon also performed together on Handel’s “Entrance of the Queen of Sheba” from Solomon and Telemann’s Concerto in D major for 3 Clarini, 2 Oboes, and Tympani.
