Geoff Payne retires from Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Australian trumpeter Geoff Payne has retired from the principal trumpet chair of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Payne joined the orchestra in 1979, and moved to principal trumpet in 1986. Throughout his career, he collaborated with many of the world's greatest conductors.

His career began in Sydney, Australia, where he began playing as a substitute musician at the age of 15. In 1982 he won the ABC Concerto Competition, and in 1984 he won First Prize at the 22nd International Trumpet Competition in Budapest, Hungary, which sparked a lot of performing and recording opportunitiies for Payne.
