National Brass Ensemble's "The Making of Gabrieli"

The National Brass Ensemble has released an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of their 2014 recording project, featuring interviews with John Williams and America's top orchestral brass players.

The National Brass Ensemble is comprised of the finest brass players in major orchestras across the country. There are twenty-six members, all of whom currently hold principal positions in the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, and San Francisco Ballet Orchestra.

The musicians gathered in San Francisco/Sonoma, CA for a residency (June 9-14, 2014), which culminated in a concert at the Green Music Center on June 12 and recording sessions at the Skywalker Ranch. Repertoire included excerpts from Gabrieli’s innovative "Sacrae symphoniae" (1597), arranged for this ensemble by San Francisco Symphony trombonist Tim Higgins, and the debut of a new work by celebrated film composer John Williams. The concert was pursued in partnerships with the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University.
