2017 Ohio ITG Conference

The 2017 Ohio ITG Conference was held at Wright State University on March 18, 2017.

The guest clinician was retired principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Phil Collins. The event was was co-hosted by Dr. Daniel Zehringer, Associate Professor of Music, Wright State University School of Music, and Mr. Eric Knorr, Artist-in-Residence, University of Dayton Department of Music. The day with filled with a diverse set of activities for participants. The conference began with a solo master class, proctored by Mr Collins. Students who participated in this event included: Ryan Buechele from Caroll High School, Jon Britt from Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Bryan Powell from BGSU, Asaresh Moghadam from Sinclair Community College, and A.J. Peoples from Wright State University.

Participants in the Festival of Trumpet Concert included:
Sinclair Community College Trumpet Ensemble, Chris Braun, director; Miami University Trumpet Quartet; Northern Kentucky University Trumpet Ensemble, Dr. George Carpten, IV, director; Capital University Trumpet Ensemble, Dr. Daniel King, interim director; Ohio Northern University Trumpet Ensemble, Dr. Dave Kosmyna, director; Bowling Green State University Trumpet Ensemble, Charles Saenz, director; University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Trumpet Ensemble, Alan Siebert, director; Wright State University Trumpet Ensemble, Dr. Daniel Zehringer, director.

A highlight of the conference was the "Reverse Audition Experience," proctored by Mr. Collins. This mock orchestral audition was done behind a screen, in two rounds. Auditionees were: BGSU student Jon Britt, WSU student Jonathan Jacky, and CCM student John Nye. Each of the three auditionees performed behind a screen, and after each player performed their round, Mr. Collins discussed what he heard and asked for feedback from the audience. This experience provided those in attendance with a glimpse into what an orchestral audition committee is listening for in a real-life audition situation.

There was also an opportunity for students to sign up for a free 20-minute lessons with various college professors. The afternoon concluded with a massed "Festival of Trumpets." A total of approximately 40 conference attendees participated in the two mass ensemble pieces, which were conducted by Eric Knorr and Charles Saenz.
