Sao Paulo Trumpet Academy

More than 70 trumpet players attended the Sao Paulo Trumpet Academy on January 16-18, 2017.  

The purpose of the course was to exchange pedagogical ideas between American teachers and Brazilian players. The event was hosted by the Sao Paulo Trumpet Guild and held at Escola Municipal de Musica de Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Featured artists included Dr. Joseph Van Fleet (Eastern Kentucky University), Dr. Mark DeGoti (Auburn University) and Brazilian artists Altair Martins and Bruno Belascos. The participants chose between beginner and intermediate-advanced courses. In addition, the academy included classes in improvisation, preparation of big band charts, sight-reading, performance anxiety, and others topics.

On Monday, January 16, Van Fleet and DeGoti led warm-up sessions, and Belasco led a jazz improvisation clinic. In the afternoon, Martins led a session focusing on big band charts and DeGoti presented the workshop, “How to Build Good Habits in Your Practice Routine.” On Tuesday, January 17, Martins and Van Fleet led warm-up sessions in the morning. In the afternoon, Belasco taught an improvisation class, DeGoti led a sight-reading clinic, and Van Fleet gave a performance anxiety presentation. The evening concluded with a jazz concert featuring Martins and Belasco. On Wednesday, Martins and DeGoti led warm-up sessions in the morning. DeGoti led the “King of Hill” competition in which advanced students competed in scale and articulation exercises. The winners were awarded Auburn University T-Shirts and other prizes. The event concluded with a joint recital by DeGoti and Van Fleet.
