John Wallace's appearances with leading orchestras and conductors around the world have earned him a reputation as a musician of enormous distinction. Born in Fife, Scotland, Mr. Wallace read music at Kings College, Cambridge, and went on to serve as the Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra for 20 years, recording and appearing as soloist with such conductors as Ricardo Muti, Andrew Davis, Leonard Slatkin, and many more. He is currently Head of the Brass Faculty at Londons Royal Academy of Music, and is Principal Trumpet of the London Sinfonietta, Londons foremost contemporary music ensemble. He is also co-editor of the Cambridge University Press Companion to Brass Instruments, and is researching the history and development of the trumpet for a publication by Yale University Press.
Mr. Wallace has an extensive list of recordings and solo appearances to his credit. Among the many new works which he has premiered are concertos by Sir Malcom Arnold, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, and many others. In 1995 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his services to music. (Wed., May 19, 10 p.m.) |
