Trumpet and the Internet. (These are notes from the presentation.)

  • Where does one start?
  • From the description of this event in the program book:
  • "Musicians of all kinds have embraced internet technologies and trumpet players are no different. The internet is bringing together complex communities of trumpet players from all parts of the globe who are extremely active in sharing….."
  • I would like to stress the importance of a few words in that statement.
    • Community
      • Most important is the word "community."
      • Regardless of all the criticisms of the internet and of the internet trumpet communities, there is no denying that the advent of networking technologies has brought hundreds, perhaps thousands of trumpet enthusiasts together in ways simply not possible before.
      • This is not a trivial matter. It is a phenomenon like no other experienced by the practitioners of "our loud and lofty art."
    • Life Long Friendships
      • Even a romance or two has been born, flourished or possibly died as a result of this community.
      • Friends I consider close and long-term. The list is long. Many I have never met face-to-face.
      • This body of individuals is extremely important to me…. Not because I need them per-se, but because I have grown to know them well and see great value in their friendship.
    • Not all of it is trumpet related
  • Another example of the goodness that can come from this community
    • Many emails from the TPIN were sent to Al Hirt before he died. Many people thanked him for having such a positive impact on their lives.
    • 2 years ago, the TPIN got together and raised the money for a student member, David Lindgren, to get a brand new bach trumpet. He was in need and he had an innocent passion for the trumpet.

Where does all this happen?

  • Cyberspace
  • Email Discussion Lists
  • TPIN since 1993
  • TPO Egroups
  • Network News - Usenet
    • rec.music.makers.trumpet
    • Jazz
    • Classical
    • You name it, they got it
  • Live chat IRC
  • Gatherings: Its not all online
    • It isn't just a bunch of isolated individuals sitting alone in front of the computer typing away
    • Members of the community meet face-to-face regularly. In small groups and large often starts as simple as an announcement sent to the list that someone is going to visit somewhere and would any TPIN'rs like to get together.. etc..
    • Indiana Brassfest, Long Beach Brassfest, Kentucky ITG, Richmond, Dallas area, Oklahoma City, Chicago (Hersethfest, Midwest), L.A., Atlanta, New Jersey, John Lynch's Bathroom, New York Brass Congress.
    • Look for the TPIN stickers

Mentoring

  • Better word than "teaching"
  • The usual categories don't always apply
  • The net is an equalizer
    • Teacher to student
    • Professional to professional
    • Student to student
    • Professional to student, etc.
  • Eventually, credentials play a minor role in the process

I am continually surprised by the quantity and quality of giving that happens within this village.

  • Rarely  are these folks in it for the long haul, but the TPIN has interested them enough to continue delivering sound advice on their own web site and through private email.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

  • Is it all good? Of course not! Is it for everyone? No way.
  • Requires time, patience, care and the development of specific skills
  • Communication skills unique kind no vocal inflection or facial expressions changes form of communication dramatically this can be most difficult to learn and very difficult to master also requires time to develop

Rose Colored Glasses?

  • Prejudice: Some would say it is a complete and total waste of time
  • For some I would agree with this statement
  • For others, it is clearly not a waste at all.
  • You won't know if you fit until you give it a try.
  • Don't judge this book by it's cover give it a fair chance.
  • It DOES require a substantial investment of time.

Good

  • I will admit to over-emphasizing the positive benefits that can be had from participating in an online community, but I also feel that many have unfairly judged our groups to be of little value or even harmful.
  • As a collegiate trumpet teacher, I am sensitive to the concerns voiced by other teachers. Young, impressionable trumpet players may not be capable of filtering through all that transpires on a trumpet-related discussion list or newsgroup. They may be confused by the vast differences of opinion on certain topics What is a student to think when they read something that contradicts what there teacher is preaching?
  • But, on the other hand it can help any level of student in many many other ways.
  • Establishing habits of inquiry. Important at any age
  • Discovery
  • inspiration
  • Frequency its on your mind more often constantly connected to an enormous body of knowledge and information
  • Improved pedagogy if the teacher also participates in or at least reads some of the discussions.
  • Teacher's ideas are challenged
  • Requires teacher to support their concepts
  • This solidifies one's ideas and can energize the delivery.

Bad

  • Unmoderated
  • Garbage
  • The perils of non-verbal communication leads to misunderstanding can take a long time and a major investment to heal.
  • No facial or vocal expressions
  • Think before you hit that send button
  • COOL OFF!
