Doug Richards is Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Among the distinquished musicians who have participated in his artist-in-residence program are Benny Carter, Thad Jones, Branford Marsalis, Woody Shaw, and Jon Hendricks among many others. His VCU Jazz Orchestra I has appeared at the Smithsonian Institution and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The ensemble has also received numerous awards at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival and in Down Beat magazines Student Recording Contest. Alumni from VCUs Jazz Studies program have performed and recorded with many of the worlds leading jazz organizations and figures, such as the Count Basie Orchestra, the Ray Charles Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, the Brecker Brothers, and many others. For three years Mr. Richards joined Wynton Marsalis, Max Roach, Ray Brown, Victor Lewis, and Martin Williams on the jazz faculty of Gunther Schullers Festival in Sandpoint, Idaho.
