Guido Basso was born in Montreal, Quebec, and began playing the trumpet at age 8. He was discovered at age 18 by Vic Damone, who heard him playing at the El Morocco club and invited him to join his tour. From 1957 until 1960, Mr. Basso toured with Pearl Bailey and her husband, Louis Bellson. For many years Mr. Basso served as music director and studio musician for the Canadian Broadcasting Company. He has also organized and performed concerts with such renowned musicians as Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Woody Herman, and Benny Goodman, and has also made numerous recordings for radio and TV. In 1994 Mr. Basso became a member of the Order ofCanada. (Thurs., May 20, 2 p.m.; Sat., May 22, 11:15 a.m.)
