Christina Stewart-Bowden started studying music at age four learning to play the piano and singing. At age seven following doctors recommendation to play a wind instrument to assist with the control of her asthma she joined the local brass band on cornet. At the age of 12 Christina began taking part in local orchestras, stage productions and musicals and was Principal Trumpet in the Sydney Public Works Orchestra.
Christina studied with Ken Smith at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and completed her Associate of Music, Licentiate and Fellowship Trinity College of London LTCL & FTCL, and her Diploma of Teaching.
Upon graduating, Ms. Stewart was employed by the Victorian Education Department where she teaches classroom music and conducts a 60-piece Primary School Band. She has kept close ties with the music community in Australia, making guest appearances with many musical groups in the Geelong and Melbourne area.
Christina has toured with the Footscray and Yarraville Band to Switzerland and United Kingdom as their principal cornet and soloist. She is the current Australian and Victorian cornet, trumpet and Champion of Champions title holder. Christina has won the Victorian cornet championship 17 times, and represented Victoria in the coveted Ern Keller Memorial Trophy (Australian Championship) on 8 occasions. In 1989 she was awarded the Errol Mason International Brass Musician of the Year in Auckland, New Zealand. (Thurs., May 20, 7:30 p.m.) |
