John McNeil is listed in Jazz Lives as one of the most influential trumpet players of his generation. Mr. McNeil toured Europe and North America as a member of the Horace Silver Quintet in the late 70s, and went on to work with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band at the Village Vanguard. Since 1978 he has led his own groups and recorded eight releases for the SteepleChase label and has taught arranging, improvisation, and ensemble playing at the New England Conservatory of Music. Mr. McNeil is also the author of the books The Art of Jazz Trumpet Playing volumes I and II.
In recent years, Mr. McNeil has been in demand as a record pro-ducer and arranger for both large and small ensembles. His latest group with co-leader Kenny Berger has issued 2 CDs, and is designed as a vehicle for both improvisation and extensive ensemble writing. Their newest release "Brooklyn Ritual" has won wide critical acclaim. (Thurs., May 20, 1 p.m.) |
