The word chops as is commonly used by musicians particularly brass playersrefers to the embouchure. Herb Kaplan likes to think of this word as an acronym to describe our Complex Harmonics Orofacial Production System. In his presentation, Dr. Kaplan will briefly describe the anatomical components of our embouchure from a dental (orthodontic) perspective, the variations therein and how individual musicians adapt to them. He will be showing slides of a trumpeter performing in the high register . . . . how much pressure do you use?
Herb is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry who practiced general dentistry for many years before returning to school at the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, where he earned a masters degree in Orthodontics. He is an amateur trumpet player who is in the private practice of orthodontics in Richmond, Virginia. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics at the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. His presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
