Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band

bigphatbandGordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, an 18-piece jazz ensemble, celebrates and personifies the best of the big band tradition with a very contemporary and original sound.  Through the writing genius of Gordon Goodwin, SRO audiences have enjoyed one of the most craftsman-like hard swinging large jazz ensembles comprised of L.A.’s finest musicians.  Gordon’s witty and insightful arrangements propel the listener on a journey through a myriad of styles:  latin, blues, swing, classical, hard-hitting jazz, and even an homage to Looney Tunes (!).  They have two Grammy nominated albums out and “The Phat Pack” is currently hitting the charts.

“The Big Phat Band provides potent testimony to the sheer exhilaration of big band jazz…a combination of crisp accuracy and  fiery soloing.” – Don Heckman, LA Times

Gordon Goodwin- Leader

goodwinAs winner of the 2006 Grammy Award for his Instrumental Arrangement of Incredits from the Pixar film The Incredibles, as well as three-time Emmy Award winner and five-time Grammy nominee, you would think that Goodwin had fulfilled his dreams and achieved all of his goals. Not by a long shot. He has yet another channel for success as leader of L.A.’s most exciting 18-piece big band jazz ensemble, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.

As winner of the 2006 Grammy Award for his Instrumental Arrangement of Incredits from the Pixar film The Incredibles, as well as three-time Emmy Award winner and five-time Grammy nominee, you would think that Goodwin had fulfilled his dreams and achieved all of his goals. Not by a long shot. He has yet another channel for success as leader of L.A.’s most exciting 18-piece big band jazz ensemble, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.  The Big Phat Band has quickly become one of the most hard swinging large jazz ensembles, comprised of L.A.’s finest musicians, which celebrates and personifies the best of the big band tradition with a very contemporary and original sound.  Gordon’s witty and insightful arrangements propel the listener on a journey through a myriad of styles:  latin, blues, swing, classical, hard-hitting jazz, and even an homage to Looney Tunes (!).

Established in 2000, the band’s debut recording, Swingin’ For The Fences, (Silverline Records) featured guests such as Arturo Sandoval, Eddie Daniels and made history as the first commercially available DVD audio title ever released and the first DVD audio title to receive two Grammy nominations.

Goodwin’s second album XXL (Silverline Records) was released on DVD-Audio and compact disc in 2003, charting its first week. XXL garnered three Grammy nominations for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, Best Instrumental Composition (Hunting Wabbits) and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocals (Comes Love with Brian McKnight and Take 6), while winning the Surround Sound Award for Best Made for Surround Sound Title. The list of guest artists repeated the high quality of the first release and featured, among others, Johnny Mathis and the incomparable Michael Brecker.

June 13th, 2006 marks the release of the composer/arranger’s third album The Phat Pack (Immergent Records) with guest stars Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Eddie Daniels and Take 6. The Phat Pack continues Gordon’s quest for the music he’s been hearing in his head since childhood. This team of players is taking all of us on a ride through Gordon’s synapses, formed by years of listening to the giants of jazz, pop, rock and funk. Gordon’s love for bands such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power and more gave him the intricate foundation for the hard driving sound we hear today. It is his ability to combine traditional jazz excellence with any musical style that makes his writing appealing to fans of even the most extreme forms of music. It is a rare and amazing thing to know that headbangers and be-boppers agree in their praise of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.

Throughout his career, Gordon Goodwin has built a larger-than-life reputation for his composing, arranging, and musical instrumentation skills. Ray Charles, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis, Toni Braxton, John Williams, Natalie Cole, David Foster, Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme, Brian McKnight and Quincy Jones are just a few of the artists he has written for, recorded and performed with.  Goodwin has conducted with world-renowned symphony orchestras in Atlanta, Dallas, Utah, Seattle, Toronto and London.

Working within the television and film industry, his cinematic scoring and orchestration craft can be heard on such films as Glory Road, National Treasure, The Incredibles, Remember The Titans, Armageddon, Bad Boys II, The Majestic, Con Air, Gone in 60 Seconds, Enemy of the State, Star Trek Nemesis, the classic cult film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and the upcoming Bah Hum Duck! A Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck riff on the classic, A Christmas Carol with Gordon and the Big Phat Band’s unmistakable sound!

New England Brass Band

NEBBFounded in 1988, the New England Brass Band (NEBB) is the premiere brass band in New England that presents music in the “British tradition.”  Based in the Boston area, the band draws its members from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine. Under the direction of founding Music Director William Rollins, the band grew in stature and reputation from its early roots as an ensemble made up from a core group of members who came from a Salvation Army background.  In 1998, Douglas Yeo, bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was named Music Director.  Recent years have found the band increasing the type, number and scope of its activities including concerts in New York City, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Washington, D.C. Montclair, New Jersey, at NABBA championships in 2001, 2003, 2004 (when the band took first place in the “Challenge” section) and 2006 (taking first place in the “Honors” section) and throughout New England. The NEBB also participated in the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Celebration sponsored by the British community of Boston and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 125th anniversary open house when the band welcomed guest conductor Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Boston Pops.

The NEBB’s website (www.newenglandbrassband.org) details the many activities of the band.

In recent years, the New England Brass Band has begun producing a series of its own CDs recorded in Boston’s acoustically acclaimed Symphony Hall.   The band’s first recording, “Christmas Joy!” (1999) was released to critical acclaim.  Subsequent recordings, “Honour and Glory” (2001), “The Light of the World” (2004) and “This Is Christmas” (2005) have also been highly successful and have helped increase the band’s recognition around the world.  The band’s newest recording, an album of music featuring American composers and American themes, will be released in the fall of this year.

SPANISH BRASS Luur Metalls

sblmIn 1989 five Spanish musicians created an eclecticand innovative project that they have been developing over the years in different fields: music performance, education and creation.  Today they tour all over the world, with courses intended for chamber music and recordings.

Their repertoire is one of the most painstakingly thought-out aspects of their performances, along with the staging. Some of their shows that are worthy of mention are: Concierto del desconcierto (A disconcerting concert), Metàl·lics (educational concert), Brassiana (with jazz trio), Make a Brazz noise here (Tribute to F. Zappa, with drums). They regularly cooperate with artists of such international renown as Christian Lindberg, Ole E. Antonsen or Kenny Wheeler. Spanish Brass Luur Metalls is also committed to the development and creation of new forms of music, working with both famous composers and with young people of great influence.

SPANISH BRASS Luur Metalls performs concertante works with orchestra, a major one of these being the first performance, with the Ciudad de Granada orchestra, conducted by Josep Pons, of Karel Husa’s Concert for Brass Quintet and Strings. With the same orchestra and conductor, it gave the first ever performance of Couleurs du Temps of renowned composer Maurice Jarre. They also recently gave the premiere of La Devota Lasciva, by Juanjo Colomer, with the Castilla y León Orchestra, conducted by Alejandro Posada.

In 1996 they won the First Prize in the "Ville de Narbonne" (France) 6th International Competition for Brass Quintets, considered to be the event of greatest prestige for this ensemble. We should also mention their participation in the prize-giving Gala of the Príncipe de Asturias awards in 1995, at the Gran Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo (Spain), broadcast on television to over 700 million watchers.

They have published nine Cds and a DVD-Cd showing their many facets: Luur-Metalls Spanish Brass Quintet (Disques du Solstice, France, 1996), No Comment (Cascavelle, Switzerland, 1998), La Escalera de Jacob (Anacrusi, Spain, 2000), SPANISH BRASS Luur Metalls & Friends (Cascavelle, Switzerland, 2001), Delicatessen (Anacrusi, Spain, 2002), Caminos de España (Cascavelle, Switzerland, 2003, Absolute with Christian Lindberg and Ole E. United States Coast Guard Band

USCGThe United States Coast Guard Band was organized in March of 1925 with the assistance of Lt. Charles Benter, leader of the United States Navy Band; Dr. Walter Damrosch, conductor of the New York Philharmonic; and “American March King” John Philip Sousa, former director of the United States Marine Band.  In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed congressional legislation resulting in the Coast Guard Band becoming the permanent, official musical representative of the nation’s oldest continuous seagoing service.  This event also established the Coast Guard Band as one of our nation’s premier service bands.

The duties of the Band have greatly expanded since 1925.  Originally a small command band used primarily for local purposes, today the Coast Guard Band is the proud musical representative of the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security, appearing at presidential and cabinet level functions on formal and informal occasions.  While Leamy Hall Auditorium on the grounds of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut remains its at-home concert venue, the Band also tours throughout the United States, and has performed in the former Soviet Union, Canada, and England.

A number of notable vocal artists have appeared with the Coast Guard Band, including Placido Domingo, Marilyn Horne, Andy Williams, Roberta Flack, Lee Greenwood, Lorrie Morgan, Shirley Jones, Lonestar, and the Boys Choir of Harlem.  Film, literary and television personalities have included Gregory Peck, Lucie Arnaz, Willard Scott, Walter Cronkite, John Amos, Alex Haley, and Richard Thomas.  Coast Guard Band concerts have also featured instrumental artists such as Bill Watrous, Dale Clevenger, Slide Hampton, Cecil Bridgewater, Chris Vadala, David Shifrin, and Philip Smith.

The Coast Guard Band has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the nation, among them the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall.  Additionally, the Band has participated in such historic events as National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies, the American Bicentennial Celebration with President Gerald Ford, World War II Fiftieth Anniversary events in England and inaugural celebrations for every President since Herbert Hoover.  The United States Coast Guard Band is especially honored to have been the first American military band to perform in the former Soviet Union, with concerts in Leningrad and the surrounding area in 1989.  The 21st century brings the prospect of many such memorable performances and proud service to the Department of Homeland Security.
