Michael Arndt is professor of trumpet at Middle Tennessee State Universitys Robert McClean School of Music. In his lecture on Roger Voisin, Arndt followed the remarkable life of one of the 20th Centurys most influential orchestral players and teacher. As a teenager, Voisin joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra to launch his long and productive association with that orchestra.
Among Arndts many interesting observations was the story about Voisin being called up to serve with the U.S. military in 1944. He passed all of the physical examinations with ease, but when it came time for the psychological evaluation, he was diagnosed with psycho-neurotic anxiety. Probably a pretty good description of a principal trumpet player!
Voisin has had the Midas touch with everything in his career. He spent 38 years in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, much of that time spent as the principal player. Voisin has also been very active as an editor, compiling 45 editions for the International Music Publishing Company. From 1975 to 1999 Voisin, without ever gaining a college degree, was a full professor of music and the chair of winds, percussion, and harp at Boston University where he taught trumpet and solfege. Former students hold orchestra seats and prominent teaching jobs all over the world.
Michael Arndt is scheduled to publish a book on the life of Roger Voisin within the next year.
