This year’s ITG Youth Competition was well represented by teen trumpeters. With one participant from Bangkok, and the others traveling from the United States and Hong Kong, their was a nice blend of world wide participants.

Alongorn Laosaichua
The competition began with John Irish, chair of the Youth Competition, welcoming everyone and extending a warm thankyou to the judges, James Sherry (Professor of Music at Mahidol University), Lertkiat Chongjirajitra (Principal trumpet, Bangkok Symphony, and Professor of Trumpet at Rangsir University), and Shu-Han Yeh (International Soloist from Taiwan). Also recognized was piano accompanist Bang Lang Do.

In a randomly selected order, Alonghorn Laosaichua (Bangkok, Thailand; Joseph Bowman, teacher) was first to perform. He appeared confident and calm as he demonstrated his clear tone and good dynamics in the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, concluding the piece with a well-executed cadenza.

Simon Bosch

Simon Bosch (Loveland, CO; William Pfund, teacher) followed with a powerful opening to the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto that quickly grabbed the audiences’ attention and then a flawless and musical transition into the slow, lyrical section. Jessica Lordi (Greenburg, PA; Kevin Eisensmith, teacher) had a notable performance, filling the room with a fabulous, full tone. She had great control and displayed a high level energy while playing K. Kennan’s Sonata (first movement. The competition continued with Sunny Sai Yu Iu (Hong Kong; Kenneth Kai Man Fung, teacher) playing the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto and Sun Jun's Celebrating Harvest. The afternoon concluded with a technically demanding performance from David Litwak (Santa Monica,CA; David Washburn, teacher) on the Tomasi Concerto (first movement). Litwak displayed great technique and clean double tonguing, making complicated passages sound simple.

The competition went off without a hitch…an enjoyable experience for all concerned. John Irish thanked all the participants and congratulated them on their fine performances.
