9:30 A.M. - CLINIC: Tiger Okoshi
Listen, Listen, Listen and Play Talking Trumpets
with 2005 Conference Rhythm Section
Grand Hotel Grand Ballroom
James Olcott, reporter
Tiger Okoshis performance clinic, held on Thursday morning at 9:30 attracted an audience of about 60. His emphasis throughout the hour was freeing oneself from the encumbrances of technical limitations and mental cloudiness. The creative process is in its purest form with technique and mental clarity working freely.
What is in your head and heart is what should come out the horn. Okoshi went on to say that performance techniques are inspired by the feel of the music and the creativity of the player. Okoshi demonstrated trumpet sounds, including slips and slides, growls and half-steps, all dictated by what the heart dictates. Clearing the mind, becoming aware of sounds, smells, and other stimuli, all help to inspire the creative process.

Once I asked my student, Play whatever you feel now. The student answered, I only can play songs or materials I practiced and I can not play them without sheet music. We should never forget why humans need music and why humans created instruments. With audience participation, fun ways to practice Call and Response will be demonstrated. Audience will learn how to take their own melodic fragments and put them into one flowing melody like a short story.
