First up was Tapio Paavilainen (Sibelius Academy, Finland, teacher- Pasi Pirinen). After performing the Enescu, he continued with a graceful rendition of the Telemann: Concerto in D for piccolo trumpet, in which he displayed his crystal clear tone in the high register along with a light and playful approach. Tim Wootton (Southwest Missouri State University, teacher- Grant Peters) then took the stage and performed the Kennan Sonata with great confidence. In a bold and commanding performance of Incantation by Desenclos, Kevin Maloney (Boston University, USA, teacher- Terry Everson) showcased his technical abilities throughout complicated passages that required skillful transitions between the high and low register. His energy and flare could be felt by all in this intricate and fascinating piece. The competition wrapped up with a spirited reading of Bozzas Rustiques by finalist Huw Morgan (Chethams School of Music, UK, teacher- John Dickenson).

With a powerful sound that filled the room, he executed phrases with great fluidity and style.
All four musicians proved that it was no accident as to why they were finalists. Their musicality and command of the instrument was witnessed by all and in a highly competitive (early morning) environment, each stepped up to the challenge in highly professional, musically satisfying manner. Congratulations to all of the finalists!
