11:00 p.m. - PERFORMANCE: Pat Harbison
with the 2005 Conference Rhythm Section
Grand Hotel Grand Ballroom

James Olcott, reporter
The last formal concert of the conference was given by jazz trumpet artist Pat Harbison, professor of jazz studies at Indiana University. With clear and easy control of the horn and in his confident and mildly aggressive style, Harbison played tunes by Monk, Joe Henderson, and others, and included in the mix his own rather dark composition, The Money Changers. At one point, he invited student jazz contestant Brynn Rector to the stage to join him and the ITG rhythm section in an up tempo version of Suddenly, As in a Morning Sunrise. During the hour-long presentation, Pat mentioned that the weeklong ITG conference had been a great inspiration to him, having heard and played with the other guest artists and the many students involved with the nightly jam sessions.
