There is no limit to the imagination, and that was the case throughout the 2005 Improvisation Competition Finals. Brad Goode, coordinator of the competition, welcomed the audience and introduced this year’s judges, Pat Harbison (Indiana University), Rustem Galiullin (Bangkok, Thailand), and Rex Richardson (Virginia Commonwealth University).

Brynn Rector (University of Denver, Lamont School of Music, teacher- Al Hood) was the first competitor to perform and played Stella by Starlight by Victor Young. She represented female trumpeters well as she closed her eyes and soloed with great poise. Next up was Etienne Charles (Florida State University, USA, teacher- Brian Goff and Scotty Barnhart), whose stage presence and pure energy was enjoyable for all who braved the early morning hour! His dazzling fingers and fantastic style was stunning as he navigated his way around the horn like a pro. Alex Nguyen (University of North Florida, USA, teacher- Brian Urso) changed things up a little bit by performing a sweet ballad on the flugelhorn. His warm tone filled the room as he creatively soloed.

The three finalists shined as they each took the stage. And with the support of the fabulous rhythm section (piano, bass, and drums) providing excellent back up, the finalists were sure to have made a musical connection with each person in the audience. Bravo!
