Though limited to two nights due to scheduling difficulties on Wednesday, the end-of-day jam sessions at the conference hotel featured a wide variety of players. The sessions were hosted by trumpeter Rex Richardson and ably backed up by the conference rhythm section of Eric Gunderson piano, Kenny Walker bass, and Mark Marlier drums. The jam sessions started around 11:30 p.m. and usually wound down around 1:00 a.m.
The early stages of the session featured some of the more experienced attendees, including such notables as Ira Sullivan, Carl Saunders, Brad Goode, Trent Austin, Matt Shulman, Pharez Witted, Ray Sasaki, Jeff Helgesen, and many others. As the session progressed, younger players were encouraged to join in, offering all in attendance an opportunity to hear the new guard and offer words of appreciation and encouragement.
