Ron Romm, Fred Mills and the Denver Brass
Gates Concert Hall

Joseph Bowman, reporter

A large crowd gathered in anticipation of seeing two icons of the trumpet reunited onstage. Ron Romm and Fred Mills, who delighted audiences for over three decades as members of The Canadian Brass, joined The Denver Brass in a concert of music for trumpet and brass choir.

From the outset, Romm and Mills infused the performance with their wonderful comedic style, something that made their Canadian Brass performances so memorable. All joking aside, however, Romm and Mills showed that they still know how to dazzle audiences with their virtuosity on the trumpet. Mills began the concert by performing Rag Polka by Claude Bolling. The work was charming, and Mills played with grace and style. Romm followed with an arrangement of Louis Armstrong’s Sleepy Time Down South/Swing that Music. It was amazing to hear Romm’s rich velvety tone, with the signature “Satchmo” vibrato.

The two trumpeters were ably assisted by the Denver Brass, a thirteen piece brass ensemble made up of local professionals from the Denver area. The group switched styles easily and perfectly balanced the soloists. Romm and Mills continued to trade solos, performing Someone to Watch over Me, Hot Licks, Hot Lips, Tico Tico, and Sobre las Olas.

For the final three selections of the concert, Romm and Mills performed together, and showed why they were the best for so long. Perfect blend, style, articulation, and many other nuances sent chills throughout the audience as they heard Tete a Tete, Royal Fireworks, and the final selection of the evening, High Society.
