ITG 2004 Banquet
Marriott Hotel

Kevin Eisensmith, Reporter

The annual ITG Banquet was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel. Despite starting an hour late due to a lengthy “Festival of Trumpets” concert, the mood was festive. Camera flashes were seen throughout the meal and ceremonies, as people took pictures of friends old and new.

Attendance for the banquet was the greatest in several years. The menu featured Clementine chicken, Yukon Gold potatoes, and green beans and carrots. Cheesecake was served for dessert. The service throughout the meal was excellent. The banquet began with a fanfare. David Hickman conducted The University of Colorado Alumni Trumpet Ensemble in a performance of Gordon Jacob’s Canterbury Flourish as a tribute to Frank W. Baird, who passed away on April 3, 2004 and who was the instructor of high brass and associate director of bands at the University of Colorado at Boulder for 35 years. He was the host of the 1981 International Trumpet Guild Conference, which attracted some 650 trumpeters from around the world.

After dinner President Chenette began the ceremonies by introducing the front table, including Officers and members of the Board of Directors and honorees. Chenette also recognized previous presidents and conference hosts. Chenette then recognized the recipients of the ITG Awards. Three individuals were awarded the ITG Honorary Award: Mel Broiles, Clifford Brown and Harry Glantz. Chenette announced that he had traveled to New York last year to present Mel Broiles his award, as Broiles was very ill; Broiles passed away a few weeks later. Receiving the award for Clifford Brown was his sister; receiving the award for Harry Glantz was his daughter. Both received hearty standing ovations. Four individuals were honored with the ITG Award of Merit: Frank Kaderabek, Anatoly Selianin, Kim Dunnick and William Adam. All four gentlemen were present and were greeted with warm applause as they accepted their awards.

Chenette next brought 2004 Conference Host Al Hood to the dais. Cheers and “bravos” accompanied the applause as Hood came to the podium. It was announced that over 1,300 people had attended the conference, certainly the largest number of participants in recent memory. Hood thanked the many “hands, feet and voices” who made the conference a success.

Alan Siebert, ITG Competitions Coordinator, announced the scholarship winners. Over seventy students submitted audition tapes for scholarship consideration; twenty students received scholarships to attend the 2004 conference. John Irish, the Youth Competition Chair, announced winners in the Junior and Senior Divisions. Michael Tunnell, the Solo Competition Chair, announced the winners of the 2004 ITG Solo Competition. Brian Edgett served as the Mock Orchestral Audition Chair. He announced the winners . . . Alan Siebert announced the results of the Jazz Competition, since Tom Erdmann, the Jazz Competition Chair, was unable to attend the banquet.

Joe Bowman, 2005 Conference Host, was invited to say a few words about next year’s conference, which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. He invited everyone to attend and promised an unforgettable experience. At the conclusion of Bowman’s remarks, Al Hood returned to the podium for the traditional passing of the “conference bugle.”

Chenette closed the ceremonies quickly, stating that there would be no time for his speech if everyone was going to make it to the evening concert on time. Laughs and applause rang throughout the room, but many people lingered for a few more hugs and handshakes, conversation, and a last photo.
